Major daily Manila Bulletin is being sued for Php 1.2 million by photographer Anton Shekker for allegedly using and printing a couple of his photos without his permission.

The photos, supposedly taken from Shekker's blog, were shown on the March 21, 2007 Travel and Tourism section of the 108-year-old newspaper.

Shekker earlier aired his sentiments through a blog entry, creating a ripple effect amongst bloggers as they echoed the case on their websites.

sources: Yugatech, Photo.net Yahoo News
(author's brief opinion starts here)

This is one very interesting case. Numerous cases regarding mainstream media using nicked photos from blogs surfaced last year. Future Comm 120 (Mass Media Law) students are lucky since they will be surely tackling this once the verdict is set.

Simbang Gabi

I was up by 3 am. I took a shower, got a jacket and waited for my dad in the sala with a cup of hot chocolate in my hand. Sip after sip, I would look at the calendar and count the days: nine more to go. With one last gulp, I stood up and put my jacket on as he got done. A breeze greeted us as he opened the door on our way to the car There’s no need to turn on the aircon: the wind outside is cold enough to give me the shivers. Our parol danced in the early December morn outside as we made our way to the first of nine dawn masses, misa de gallo, simbang gabi.

Yes, it’s that time of the year when kids go giddy and jumpy and eagerly wish for some goodies from Santa, when adults go shopping for gifts to give and teens do pretty much anything in between. Dancing lights brighten up the once lifeless streets and young people traverse these roads, singing carols at every home, either just for fun or with a hope of a small fee.

Christmas is here again.

It was 15 minutes prior to the mass, and yet stalls selling the season’s delicacies outside the church already had people having their orders taken, to be picked up after the mass. Cold wind caressed my cheek once again as I stepped outside the car. That and the church being dressed with Christmas lights made me feel more excited.

I started attending dawn masses with my dad when I was in my junior year in highschool. That same year, I wrote about Christmas being not what it used to be (Different Christmas, Youngblood, Decemeber 23, 2004.) It seemed to me that it won’t be as much merrymaking as it did in the previous years, perhaps due to the circumstance that everybody was in at that time.

So my dad got me into going with him for Simbang Gabi. He told me about a premise that if you complete the novena mass, you would be granted that wish, and that was the motivation by some to wake up in the wee hours of the morning. I thought of my wish, and I remembered my college exams the next year, and that’s what I wished for back then.

We went to the church beside my highschool, and I saw some batchmates already in our school uniform. Classes start at around 7:30, and the mass ends at around 5:30, so I thought that they’ll get some breakfast before coming to school.

It was a hard ordeal for me at first to attend the mass: waking up at 3 in the morning no matter what time I slept the night before was hard, but I got used to it as the days went by.

It’s the time we spend together that I looked forward to every morning that I’ll wake up and my dad and I would go together to hear mass, get some puto bumbong and bibingka and drive back home. told over and over again whenever the season comes. There’s this one time when the presiding was the one known to be a bit lethargic, and he almost succeeded in putting the both up us asleep, if it wasn’t for the constant pinching my dad and I did to one another. That happened on the first day of simbang gabi two years ago, and we just came from a gathering the night before, so imagine our struggle to wake up early that day. We also had this habit of not taking anything before mass, except for a hot chocolate. Dad told me that during this time, it would be best if we let the host be the first food we take.

Simbang gabi has became an annual event for the two of us, and each time I go to each mass, the more I realize what Christmas really means. It‘s not the number of gifts we see under the Christmas tree nor getting that expensive thing on our wishlist, it’s the satisfaction that we get from seeing a person’s eye light up as she opens the gift that you spent all night making by yourself and from sharing a night’s meal with the people dear to you.

Every year I wished for something, and incidentally or not, almost all came true. I passed my entrance exams, graduated with honors, and got into a good university. But my wish to have love live is still under the works (well, that can wait. My now hectic academic life deprives me from immersing into another responsibility.) Nevertheless, it’s not the wishes that I was after, it was experiencing a tradition years in the making.

In a few days, I’ll be waking up at 3am to take a shower, get a jacket, drink hot chocolate, and wait for my dad. We’ll welcome the cold winds as we board the car and drive to the church near my highschool, get our orders for puto bumbong and bibingka taken, and attend the first of nine dawn masses, misa de gallo, simbang gabi, and complete the novena again. My wish, that may everyone feel the spirit of Christmas wherever they are.

____________________________________________________________

Written December 14, 2007.
I would like to share a part of Cheche Lazaro's acceptance speech at Gawad Plaridel that really speaks of how I felt in one of my posts:

"More than any other time in our TV history, we now think in terms of exclusives. Our newscasts are punctuated by “exclusives.” Perhaps it is time to review what the intrinsic value of an exclusive is and more importantly, how our choices of exclusives affects the audiences we reach. One vivid example is an “exclusive” about two women involved in a hair-pulling incident. It may be worthwhile to ask ourselves what value this has as a news story aside from the riveting human drama of two women tearing at each other’s hair. Or one story of recent memory is the continuing saga of the Ruffa-Yilmaz break-up, which stayed with the major newscasts on a daily, telenovela basis. What is the take-out of viewers? Are we doing this just to attract our audience, or keep up with competition? Is there a lesson to be learned? Today, showbiz news is a part of every newscast. Admittedly, the bottomline is enhanced by showbiz news. While showbiz news is strong in form, it has to be given context and careful, responsible thought. "

read more here...

Ang galing daw!” she said when she was asked for the cast’s reactions.

The team consisted of Roy Dela Cruz, Lenard Robles, Enrico Villaruz, Clint-Daniel Abenoja, Marti Lacambra, Christian Buñales, Joey Marcelo, Pocholo Balingit, and Erick Christopher Cruz. I rewrote the whole thing. Well it's the guy's last article (supposed to be) before he migrates. But I'm still disappointed, he didn't exert much effort into writing his last article.

What you read is the rewritten version.

But the survival of tabloids or “the poor man’s newspaper” says otherwise.

Once again, the demise of newspapers is foreseen, but this time with the advent of the internet and various online news services being pointed out as the cause for this ‘inevitable end’. People prefer reading the news found on the streets rather than the ones printed on broadsheets. A leading newspaper in the country printed free versions of the paper, and even put up online versions of their issues. But as the broadsheet manages to cope with the online revolution, tabloids in the Philippines seem to worry the least.

Half the price and size, tabloids enjoy more sales than broadsheets with their “own” appeal to the masses. With crime stories written in utmost brevity and sensationalism and ever popular sex-themed articles, the tabloid has been pushed down to its lowly place. Even though news on current issues can be found on tabloids, the sex content that attracts consumers gives the tabloid its cheap image.

There is a possibility for tabloids to rise from its status by publishing articles that are relevant to the readers’ lives, pretty much like what broadsheets publish. Newspapers are flexible enough that they have survived through various prophecies of doom upon the arrival of broadcasting, and tabloids are still selling twice as much as newspapers do, despite the sexual image it has portrayed to the industry.

Extinction is not the next thing for print media, at least not in the near future. As it has emerged to be a reliable medium, its survival is very much expected.

Based from:

Things are not all as they seem: The Tale of the Tabloids

By Hector Bryant L.

Whew, the centennial of our beloved
university is just a year away! And
yet how come I can’t feel the
administration’s plan for our 100th
year celebration? Maybe they are
having problems coming up with things
to celebrate our decade of existence
as the country’s premiere learning
institution. So let me suggest some
things that might be done to improve
our dear campus in line with the
celebration of our one hundredth year
in 2008.

CRS V.3

I think most (if not all) UP students
would agree with me that the
university’s computerized registration
system has long been a student’s pain
in the… head during registration
period. So I’m suggesting constructing
a huge tambiolo in the sunken garden,
in which all subject slots will be put
inside scribed in fancy colored balls.
Then all of UP’s students will draw
one (whether or not he/she needs the
subject he/she gets) and after drawing
the balls a bargaining phase will
commence where students will bargain
the subjects they need with other
students, trading slots.

ALTERNATIVE TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS

Personally, I think the board of
regents should be abolished because it
doesn’t serve the interest of the
campus’ students who are the very
composition of the university (think
kule issue plus TFI). I think it
should be replaced with an automated
system where everyone will have a say
on the decisions made for the
university. Who isn’t bored of
regents anyway? (Pun intended) With
the system I am proposing, every
professor, student, janitor-anyone
within immediate concern of the
university will have power equivalent
to their percentage in the university
population. The automated system will
go like this: You will just have to
text POSITION <space> LAST NAME
<space> FIRST NAME <space> MIDDLE
NAME <space> ID NUMBER <space> COLLEGE
<space> DEPARTMENT <space> DECISION
<space> REASON <space> and send it to
outer space! Uhm, err to 1908, I mean
then a computer will tabulate the
results. Voila! Vox populi, vox Dei.

ADDITIONAL COLLEGES AND COURSES

With the growing diversity and variety
of the students’ interests in the
campus, I think it is crucial for the
university to create the following
colleges and courses:

(I) COLLEGE OF ELITISM AND
OVERAESTHETICS- This new college might
create a problem with the College of
Business Administration, College of
Mass Communication, College of Arts
and Letters and School of Economics as
the said colleges might experience an
exodus of their students who want to
shift to the following courses to be
offered by this new college:
(1) BS ABDOMINAL KINETICS- Caters to
those students who, when walking,
looks like a manananggal that’s about
to be divided in half as the swaying
of their mid section suggests.
**JOB OPPORTUNITY: Belly dancer or
Guest relations officers in clubs.
(2) BA SOSYAL STUDIES-Dedicated to
students who have passion in climbing
the social ladder.
JOB OPPORTUNITY: Social Butterfly
(3) BS FISCAL MISMANAGEMENT-Students
under this course will be taught to
spend their money like there’s no
tomorrow.
**JOB OPPORTUNITY: Politician
(4) BS GIMMICKAL GEOGRAPHY-Mostly
field study where graduates of this
course should develop a nose for
partying.
**JOB OPPORTUNITY: Events planner,
travel agent
(5) MA CONYOTICS-advanced studies in
elitism. Only graduates of the BA
SOSYAL STUDIES, BS FISCAL
MISMANAGEMENT and BS GIMMICKAL
GEOGRAPHY who obtained a GWA of 1.25
or higher are allowed to take the
program.
JOB OPPORTUNITY: Business tycoon
SUGGESTED DEAN:
ORGANIZATION: A Masscom college org
suddenly transforming into a
department org +wink+

(II) COLLEGE OF ACTIVISM-I know this
college should have been established
long before any other colleges were
created in the campus. This college
shall offer the following degree
programs:
(1) BS MILITARY ADVENTURISM-students
under this program will be taught the
art of the coud d’etat, military junta
and the likes
**JOB OPPORTUNITY: Senator
(2) BA COMMUNISM-self explanatory.
Takot ako +wink+
**JOB OPPORTUNITY:NPA spokesperson
(3) BA POPULAR MOBILIZATION-Students
following this degree program will be
taught basic shouting, placard
painting and mob marching.
**JOB OPPORTUNITY: Partylist
representative
(4) MA MARXIST STUDIES-Graduates from
this graduate program are expected to
know the life and teachings of Karl
Marx
**JOB OPPORTUNITY:NPA spokesperson
(5) MA MAO TSE-TUNG STUDIES-An
alternative to the MA Marxist studies
program plus literature from Red China
**JOB OPPORTUNITY:NPA spokesperson
SUGGESTED DEAN: Juan Paolo Alfonso

(III) SCHOOL OF TACTICAL SCHOLASTICS-
We have had the skill even way back in
high school or even to some, in
elementary. The art of tactical
scholastics has long been a effective
alternative to conventional studying.
It is expected that the number of
enrollees under this program would be
a lot less than the ones I’ve already
mentioned because of the ethical
issues tagged under the subject matter
but in a few semesters time the school
of tactical scholastics would
eventually transform to a college of
tactical scholastics once it sinks in
to the society.
(1) BS CHEATING AND FORGERY (MAJOR IN
PRINT OR ORAL EXAMINATION)-Official
file tampering degree
**JOB OPPORTUNITY: Fixer
(2) BA TEACHER’S PETOMOLOGY-this
course explores the art of tactical
gift-giving and obedience. Its
graduates become adept in getting a
flat one with mere charm.
**JOB OPPORTUNITY: Professional student
SUGGESTED DEAN: Any Student

(IV) INSTITUTE OF ELJIBITIZOLOGY-The
College that explores the potentials
of the third sex.
(1)BA CLOSETOLOGY-The art of hiding.
Suggested professors are piolo
pascual, uma khouni, paolo
ballesteros, etc.
(2)BA HOMOSEXUAL LINGUISTICS-Students
studying the gay lingo and its
evolution.
(3)CERTIFICATE IN FINGER GYMNASTICS-a
crash course on how to have that
little pinky finger of yours up while
picking up a glass, holding a vase,
etc.
SUGGESTED DEAN: Piolo Pascual or
Danton Remoto
EXTRA:Abolition of the Third World
Studies Library and converting it to
the Third Sex Studies Library

OTHERS:
BS EXHIBITIONOLOGY (MAJOR IN PETTING
OR NECKING)-With the rising number of
the academic populace exhibiting
public displays of affection, it is
imperative that such a degree program
be made. Classroom shortage is not a
problem because classes under this
course maybe held either in the lagoon
or the sunken garden.

PhD in ORGANIZATIONALSTUDIES (MAJOR IN
ORG MINOR IN ACADEMICS)-This graduate
program should only be offered to
students who have had at least two
organizations in his/her undergraduate
years. Once this criterion has been
satisfied, the screening committee
should make sure that aspiring
applicants to this program should have
at least at one point in their stay in
the university had (1)Skipped class in
favor of an org activity; (2)spent
more time with orgmates than with
family; and (3)gone to campus only to
attend an org activity.
